WLOV Sidewalks to be improved in Booneville
John Davis has a ramp for the physically challenged, but it's not exactly what he would call user friendly. The sidewalks are also difficult to climb. "I've seen some falls over the years. I've been here so long. It would be great if we could get this totally re-done,” said Davis. Mayor Derrick Blythe has the plans in hand to make significant improvements to six intersections in downtown. "If you are in a wheelchair, you couldn't get on our sidewalks. There were only two that you could,” said Mayor Blythe. ADA compliant access pads will be installed at those intersections courtesy of a grant from the Mississippi Department of Transportation. "Our downtown is suffering from a lack of ownership. We're hoping that by doing this project and by investing in our community that we're gonna motivate people to spend money,” added Blythe. The $750,000 grant will be combined with the city's portion, which is $150,000. The money will be used to replace or refurbish sidewalks where the need is most critical. "Well, I think they could use some improvement. We've got these steps down here in front of here and you've got elderly people. They have trouble getting up and down,” said Booneville resident Marylin Jones. New lighting will also be installed. The city's triangle as they call it will become a green space - one of several in the plans. The mayor says the improvements will compliment the efforts of those who are investing in downtown. "Owners are actually taking interest in our community again and that's what we're excited about and I think this is only going to help build that,” said Blythe.
