Bishop Put to Death by State
Dale Bishop was executed at the Mississippi State Penitentiary in Parchman for his role in the 1998 claw hammer killing of Marcus James Gentry near Saltillo.

Mississippi Corrections spokeswoman Tara Booth says Bishop died by lethal injection at 6:14 pm Wednesday.

Bishop had hoped the US Supreme Court or Mississippi's governor might spare him, but both denied his requests to set aside the execution.

Bishop's attorneys said his life should have been spared because he did not swing the hammer that killed Gentry.

Amory Man Dies after Monday Night Fire
A man died Wednesday afternoon at a Georgia burn center two days after being burned in a restaurant fire in Amory.

It's a fire police say he accidentally started.

Authorities say the explosion occurred after 57-year-old Robert H. Davis of Amory broke into the Gilleylen Dairy Bar restaurant late Monday night and allegedly tried to cook something but in the process set the business on fire.

Davis then ran more than eight blocks to his house and jumped in the shower to put out the fire.

Emergency responders took Davis to a burn center in Atlanta where he died.

Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley says Davis died from third degree burns which covered 95 percent of his body.

Another Public Hearing Set for Thursday on Highway 9
The Mississippi Department of Transportation is holding another public meeting on changes it wants to make to Highway 9 in Pontotoc County.

A hearing was held last month on the proposals to change the section of the roadway from Highway 6 to Highway 78.

But public opinion from that meeting led to some new proposals.

The latest meeting will be held Thursday from 4 pm to 7 pm at the Pontotoc Community Center on North Main Street.

Noted trial lawyer Dickie Scruggs has about ten days of freedom left.

He has been ordered to serve his five-year sentence at a federal prison in Ashland, Kentucky, for attempting to bribe a state judge

At the same time, documents filed Wednesday in federal court in Oxford showed Scruggs's son, Zach, will serve his 14-month sentence for failing to report the crime at the federal prison in Pensacola, Florida.

Sidney Backstrom, also convicted of attempted bribery and sentenced to 28 months, previously was ordered to report to the prison in Forrest City, Arkansas.

Dickie Scruggs and Backstrom were each to report to prison August 4.

Zach Scruggs was told to report August 15.
